Chapter 9

9. Licensing and updates

Use Control Room to activate and manage the Data Wrangler license. Data Wrangler shows its current state in Settings, then About.

9.1 License states

Displayed state Meaning Action
Active Processing is allowed Continue normal work
Expired Processing is blocked; prolonged offline use, expiration, or another validation failure can cause this Reconnect to the internet and check the system clock. Reopen Data Wrangler, then check the license in Control Room; renew it if required
Inactive No active license allows processing Activate the license in Control Room
Unknown Processing is blocked until the license state is confirmed Check connectivity and license status in Control Room

Expired and inactive states show a banner. Unknown blocks processing without a banner. License codes belong in Control Room, not in a source table or support log.

In version 0.5.1, an offline copy stays Active while its licensing service allows offline use. After that time ends, it shows Expired, and Run file becomes unavailable.

9.2 Update the application

  1. Let the current job finish, or cancel it and inspect its results.
  2. Quit Data Wrangler.
  3. Use Control Room to install the available Data Wrangler update.
  4. Open Data Wrangler under the same user account.
  5. Check the version in Settings, then About. Confirm the connection and mappings before the next import.

The application keeps its local database outside the installation folder. An update preserves that data. A staged file must be selected again after reopening.

9.3 Back up local data

Quit Data Wrangler before copying its data folder. Keep the complete folder from chapter 2 in a secure backup location.

The folder can contain credentials, license state, and metadata. Treat it as sensitive. Copying it does not transfer a valid license activation to another computer.

There is no in-application backup or restore control. Ask your administrator before replacing local data with an older backup.

9.4 Remove or move the application

Before removal, back up your local data as described in section 9.3.

  1. Quit Data Wrangler. Open Control Room under the user account that activated Data Wrangler.
  2. Select Data Wrangler, then Uninstall Data Wrangler.
  3. Leave Also remove Data Wrangler data off to keep settings, mappings, and history for a later installation.
  4. Select Uninstall Data Wrangler to confirm.

Accept the system's administrator prompt when requested.

Turning Also remove Data Wrangler data on permanently deletes that account's Data Wrangler data folder. This includes the database, settings, mappings, rules, and history. The application cannot undo the deletion.

Uninstall clears the local activation and tries to release its license seat. If Control Room reports an unconfirmed seat release, resolve that warning before activating on another computer.

To move computers while keeping the application installed, quit Data Wrangler. Select Deactivate license in Control Room under the same user account. Install and activate Data Wrangler on the new computer, then configure its CatDV connection and mappings.

A different computer or user account does not automatically receive your configuration or history.
