Chapter 7
7. Licensing and updates
Use Control Room to install, license, open, and update Vault. Vault's Settings > About reports the version and license. You do not enter license codes in Vault.
7.1 Check your license
Open Settings > About and read License. An active license shows Active. Tier and Expiration appear when Vault has those details. Vault reads the displayed license state when its window opens. After a license change in Control Room, close and reopen Vault to refresh About, alerts, and the header status. Those displays can keep an older state while the window stays open.
A license problem pauses new backup and sync runs. It keeps your local copy available for offline browsing. A run already in progress can finish. The license check does not stop that run partway through.
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
| No active license | Enter your Vault license code in Control Room. |
| License expired | Renew the license in Control Room. |
| Code in use on another computer | Release the activation there, or use another code. |
| License suspended or revoked | Email support@northshoreautomation.com. |
| Computer clock changed | Correct the clock, then check the license in Control Room. |
| License could not be checked | Check internet access and the license in Control Room. |
Vault checks the license before each new run. Once the license is valid, the next eligible run can start without restarting Vault. The connection, backup folder, and pause state must also allow a run.
7.2 Offline license checks
A previously validated license can remain usable while the license service is unreachable. Vault allows up to 72 hours from the last successful contact with that service. This period does not restart when you close or reopen Vault.
When you open Vault after a missed daily check, License can show Licensed with Checking soon. This means the offline allowance remains available. After the 72-hour limit, new backups pause until Vault can validate the license again.
Restore internet access and check the license in Control Room. An expired subscription or a revoked license needs its own resolution; reconnecting alone does not renew it.
Offline browsing remains available after this allowance ends. Iconik syncing still needs an Iconik connection and network access, even while the license allowance remains valid.
7.3 Renew or move a license
To renew, open Vault's entry in Control Room and follow its license instructions. Enter the renewed code there. Keep the code out of screenshots and support logs.
To move an activation to another computer, release it through Control Room on the original computer first. Then activate Vault on the new computer. License activation belongs to the account that activated it. Use that account to release it.
If the original computer is unavailable, email support@northshoreautomation.com to release the activation. Releasing a license keeps the local backup. It prevents new runs until a valid license is active again.
7.4 Update Vault
Use Control Room to check for and install Vault updates. Vault does not download or install its own replacement.
- Check the release notes for the version you plan to install.
- Let the current backup finish, or select Pause on Home to save progress.
- Close the Vault window.
- Open Vault's entry in Control Room and install the available update.
- Open Vault again.
- Check Settings > About > Version.
- If you paused before updating, select Resume when you are ready.
Vault refuses an update while its window is open. Closing the window stops syncing. Vault has no background service that continues the backup during an update.
Keep your existing backup and application data folders. Use Delete local copy only when you intend to remove the backup, as described in Settings.
7.5 If an update or license action fails
Keep the existing folders and note the exact Control Room message. Check the installed Vault version in Settings > About if the window opens. For support, collect the version, build, problem time, and relevant logs using Logging and support. Send them to support@northshoreautomation.com.
If Vault reports that the backup was written by a newer version, use that newer version. Do not delete the backup to clear a version error. See Troubleshooting for the next steps.
