Move file

Manual / Actions / File

Move a file.

Read Shared action rules for disabling this action, outputs, error routing, and recovery. Also read File sources and destinations.

Configuration and behavior

Same parameters as Copy file without Checksum. Output: path. On a collision with Overwrite off, the existing final destination and the source are preserved, and no partial final file is published.

On one filesystem, Move relocates an ordinary regular source file without reading or writing its content. A symbolic-link source uses the target-content transfer described in File sources and destinations, even on one filesystem. Across filesystems, it writes a temporary file only in the selected destination folder, publishes the complete final file, and then removes the source. It does not make a private Relay copy. If the transfer fails or is cancelled before publication, the source remains and no partial final file appears. Relay removes only a temporary file it owns; if cleanup cannot be verified, the job reports the retained file.

If the final destination is complete but Relay cannot remove the source, the step fails with move incomplete: complete destination <dest> is present; source <src> could not be removed: <cause>. Both files can then be present. Check both locations before retrying.
